Sample Sales for a girl with Designer Taste on a Budget: RACHEL ZOE

Sample Sales for a girl with Designer Taste on a Budget: Rachel Zoe

-Megan Quist-

It was really rewarding to see every division of retail merchandising along with apparel design come together within the course of all our meetings through Cover NY's educational Tours. Seeing the embroidery studio, Sem Sem Factory, M&S Schmalberg, and Trim Lab bring together the little pieces that put together garments really made myself appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into making every element of each clothing item on a rack in the store. Then to see showrooms for buyers such as Collection 18, RJM, Mundi Westport, and Medusa's Heirlooms was very interesting in the fact that they were all so different, but very successful in their own ways for each retail sector. Finally, being in brick-and mortar stores such as Century 21 meeting with a buyer which is a career that I would like to pursue after being a merchant analyst intern this summer was really rewarding to see all of the planning and budgeting come to life in a store and watch individuals shop the merchandise.

What does all of this have to do with a sample sale?

The Rachel Zoe sample sale I stumbled upon just a few blocks from our hotel. Walking in everything was sorted by size. Most items were the same throughout each size, but some were so early on in the sample process that they did not even have tags on them yet. This sample sale too showed the in-between stages of merchandise when allocating what should go where, and in what size, material, and quantity. Some clothing items there were obviously samples as they had not been finished all the way. Others such as the pantsuit I bought I later found had some defects such as the fact that it need a button that had more strength since the shoulders would continuously fall off of myself even with sticky tape.

Rachel Zoe is a stylist gone designer and her clothing has a men's wear feel to it with feminine and flattering lines. Some pieces were more  Her Ready to Wear collection ranges from $325.00-$895.00. It was amazing to get a $345.00 pantsuit for only $40.00 which is how a girl on a budget in NYC can still stay stylish. Although they may be designs from last fall, they are still trendy! I highly recommend checking out her style report at: The Box of Style
